Short Films in Times of COVID

T

his term started with bigger obstacles than most students have faced in the past decades. Currently, humankind deals with a pandemic impacting societies in every way. From economies, medicine, and educational systems globally.

UAL Students' Short Films In Times of COVID

When faced with the challenges of COVID and filming in different locations, I suggested using recognizable elements in the production design process and wardrobe style to accomplish the illusion of being shot in the same location.

When faced with the challenges of COVID and filming in different locations, I suggested using recognizable elements in the production design process and wardrobe style to accomplish the illusion of being shot in the same location. I pulled these books from my library and shared with the crew and a few other filmmakers.

The Short Films I was a part of:

Morphology: Writing My 1st Script

In a world where being different is penalized, women used, and men cannot be weak or submissive. Katya is a fascinating creature without specified gender, who guards sexuality by turning everyone who challenges the existence of the species into mannequins and collecting them in the vault.

Understanding the difference between a screenwriter and a novelist has been one of the greatest lessons this term. Storytelling has always been a way of artistic expression for me and learning to write for the screen has to be the most valuable skill I aim to master yet.

Breaking Point: Producing & Costume Designing

Written by Charlie Whitehead, Breaking Point is a dark comedy about a hitman Harry locked in his apartment during the COVID Pandemic. He tried to distract himself with hobbies but when faced with his annoying and bored neighbor Linda, he cannot help himself but to imagine all the things he could do to her if given the chance.

I have produced, I dare say, hundreds of photoshoots in my career thus far, however, producing a short-film was a completely different monster, specially during lockdown. Working with other filmmakers developing an audio-visual experience of one story is my new favorite area of entertainment.

What's It All About?: Co-Directing

A poetic documentary about the humanity that exists in all of us. From morning to evening, this film takes us through the day in the life of Kyril Elneser in Venezuela, Diana Elneser in Panama, Tokiko Morishima in London, and John Townsend in Ireland during times of COVID to discover what life is really all about for them while going through such a difficult time in life globally.

Co-directing with Daniel Noble was a magical experience and reminded me why I wanted to become a filmmaker in the first place. He created a concept designed to remind us of what is important not only as artists but as human-beings as well.

The Society: Costume Designing

Costume designing for this short-film electronically was quite challenging, intricate and fun. I started by creating a mood-board that included the work of 'out of this world' fashion designers and artists that included people of the caliber of Rick Owens and Michelle Lamy, who served me as huge inspiration for the final work you will see in the film.
